The iPhone XS is Apple’s successor to the iPhone X, which was introduced in 2017 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the iPhone. The smartphone comes in two versions: the iPhone XS and the larger iPhone XS Max
The name of the new iPhone may be somewhat confusing. However, XS does not stand for ‘extra small’, but for 10s. That sounds more logical. The successor to the iPhone 6 was also the 6s, and the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 also got an S-version after a year.
The design of the iPhone X has been maintained, with a screen notch on the front and minimal screen edges all around so that the size does not get too out of hand. The waterproof housing is again made of glass, which makes the device quickly dirty and fragile: the iPhone X already entered the books as the most fragile smartphone ever. A case is therefore recommended. The glass housing, however, ensures that the iPhone XS is wirelessly rechargeable. However, a fast charger is still missing.
The iPhone Xs has the same screen and housing format as the iPhone X. Unfortunately, there is no headphone port in the housing, even an adapter is no longer included in the box. In addition to the regular iPhone Xs, Apple has also presented the larger iPhone Xs Max. This smartphone is even bigger: the screen panel has a huge diagonal of 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) and a size of 15.8 x 7.7 x 0.8. The regular iPhone XS has a screen diagonal of 5.8 inches (14.7 cm) and is 14.4 x 7.1 x 0.8 centimeters.
HDR iPhone XS
The OLED display in the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max have a Full-HD resolution of (respectively) 2436×1125 and 2688×1242 and are the first iPhones with HDR support, but not the first smartphones. Sony Xperia smartphones have been equipped for some time with an HDR screen, for example on the Xperia XZ2.
Just like the cheaper iPhone XR, the iPhone XS is equipped with Apple’s A12 Bionic chipset and 4GB ram. Apple has not yet let us know how big the battery capacity is. This was at the iPhone X from 2017 still 2716 mAh. In terms of storage capacity, you can choose between 64, 256 or 512GB.
Not only does the iPhone XS have a SIM card slot, but there is also an e-SIM chip built in. A kind of built-in SIM card that you link yourself to a provider. This makes the iPhone XS theoretically dualism, provided you have a provider that supports e-sim in addition to your SIM card provider. For holidaymakers or people who also use their iPhone for business purposes, this is a big plus.
Although iPhones are known for their good cameras, they have been outdone by Huawei and Samsung. The dualcam on the back has been given a small upgrade, in terms of lenses and there is now the possibility to adjust sharpness in bokeh photos (photos taken in portrait mode). The dual camera consists of two 12 megapixel lenses: a telephoto lens and a wide-angle lens, so you can take ordinary or zoomed-in photos.
The iPhone and iPhone XS XS Max are three colors available: gray, silver and gold. The iPhone XS costs 1159 euros for the 64GB version. The variants with 256GB and 512GB cost 1329 and 1559 euros. The larger iPhone XS Max costs 1259 euros (64GB), 1429 euros (256GB) or 1659 euros (512GB). From September 14 you can pre-order the iPhone XS, from September 21 the smartphone is available.
